📱 Why and how does a transparent cell phone cover turn yellow?
If a transparent shell turns yellow, it is primarily due to the material used to design it. Of course, as we said earlier, a colored or decorated shell will potentially yellow too, but you will notice it less: maybe only on the edges. But the transparent shell, as design as it is, is not forgiving. And one day you realize: disaster, it has yellowed!
Indeed, these shells are usually made of silicone, and silicone is a polymer with excellent flexible properties. 🧽 How to clean a yellowed transparent case?
There are several techniques, each more effective than the other, to clean the stains on a yellowed hull that you have surely seen after analyzing it. We decipher each tip and how to do in detail below: bleach, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, lemon and finally toothpaste.
⭕ Bleach, a good idea to clean and whiten?
So sure, bleach is effective! Some people swear by it besides, it's part of their little daily tricks. At PaprikaseBut we're not so much a fan of it because it's not so much ecological. But it's hard not to tell you about it because it's so formidable. And let's face it, we all have a bottle lying around our house, in case there is something to clean.
Before anything else, and especially before you remove your transparent phone cover, remember to put on gloves to start cleaning. Remember that it is a very irritating product. Also be careful not to get it in your eyes, otherwise rinse thoroughly with clear water and go to the doctor!
Mix water and bleach in a medium-sized bowl that allows you to completely immerse your silicone shell (do not leave the phone in it of course). Leave it on for at least 30 minutes and then rinse. That's it! You can do a second cleaning with your dishwashing liquid or soap to remove the somewhat... persistent smell. Then wipe gently with a clean cloth.
⭕ Bicarbonate, a really good idea to whiten your protection
Maybe you know baking soda, you probably even have some in your closet! It allows you to replace, or at least in homemade recipes, many products at home, all naturally. It is used to make laundry detergent or dishwasher powder. And well to clean your transparent shell, it is the same thing. There are several techniques of use, we explain two that you have surely seen elsewhere, but let us explain anyway.
The first is to sprinkle your cell phone shell with the bicarbonate. We advise you to have previously moistened it with warm water, otherwise the powder will simply slide off and end up in the bottom of your sink (which will be quite clean, of course). You leave it on for a few minutes, then scrub your silicone shell vigorously with a toothbrush you were about to throw away. Then rinse with clean water. If you have trouble getting all the baking soda residue off, we suggest you finish the cleaning with a little of your dishwashing liquid.
Well, that's sporting anyway! So let's move on to the second technique which is already more chill. Take your baking soda and mix it with warm water in a bowl. The ratio between the bicarbonate and the water needs to be unbalanced, and there needs to be more bicarbonate. The idea is to make a paste rather than a bicarbonate soup. Remember: we need a paste, nothing watery!
Once the paste is homogeneous and the effervescent effect has dissipated, spread the mixture on your shell on both sides. We advise you to leave it on for 30 to 40 minutes. Then, with a toothbrush, rub lightly here and there to remove the residue of dirt. Clean with soap and rinse thoroughly with clear water. The trick is to finish with dishwashing liquid if necessary. Finally, dry everything: your shell is like new!
⭕ How to use hydrogen peroxide for your phone shell
Hydrogen peroxide, whose real name is hydrogen peroxide, is a very powerful cleaner. Like its colleague bleach, we advise you to handle it only with gloves, you never know! And above all, avoid any contact with the eyes.
Here's a little tutorial for simple and effective use: mix three parts water with one part hydrogen peroxide in a bowl big enough to immerse your transparent shell. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and then rinse with clean water. Scrub the few remaining residues or stains with soap if necessary. The unstoppable tip remains the same: clean with an old toothbrush or sponge!
⭕ Lemon, yes but how do you use it?
Lemon is clearly the natural solution par excellence! The night before, you may have cooked a nice fish dish and added a few drops of lemon... and now what's left of it is ready to be forgotten in your fridge. In a bowl, mix dishwashing liquid and lemon juice. Add a little water to dilute it, dip your hull in the mixture and leave it for a few hours. You can also use this mixture just before going to bed. Rinse with clean water and you're ready to go with your clear cell phone case!
⭕ Toothpaste to clean your cell phone case
Toothpaste is another possible solution for cleaning your smartphone case. Technically, we all have some in our bathroom, so why not use it? Spread your shell with toothpaste and then scrub with a toothbrush in circular motions. Remember to scrub well in the corners, the edges of the camera or the charging port: these are places that we handle so often that dirt quickly become embedded.
⭕ Are there any other tips?
Yes of course there are! We suggest you of another style white vinegar. Let's just say that everyone has vinegar in a cupboard, so you might as well take advantage of it! You can dip your shell directly into the white vinegar or you can dilute it. The smell being all the same taking, do this with the windows open, make a second cleaning with a sponge (or a clean cloth) and soap, then rinse with clear water.
We also have views on household alcohol, but for the time being we haven't tried it, so it's hard to advise you! Of course, we're not talking about drinking alcohol here, we're talking about cleaning alcohol.
Also, dry your hull either in the open air for a natural drying, or with a soft cloth like microfiber.
🤔 How often should you clean your protective phone shell?
There is no stated or recommended time frame! It's up to you to decide how often depending on the condition of your shell as far as yellowing is concerned. As for the dirt itself, a little wipe with a microfiber cloth on a regular or even daily basis may be enough. For a real cleaning, we would recommend once a month. Our favorite tips are definitely baking soda and lemon for a thorough cleaning with a product that will serve you in your household as green as possible daily.
